Unveiling New Schedules and Policies for Winter Ferry Reservations

Washington State Ferries have made a few positive changes to the Ferry reservation system for the upcoming Winter sailing season (Dec. 31 to March 23, 2024). The goal is to enhance the reservation experience, and better accommodate emergency and standby vehicles, while also reducing travel disruption caused by vessel or crew shortage that can cause a sailing to be canceled.

Here’s a rundown of what’s new:

Shift in Reservation Release Time

They have shifted the reservation release time from the traditional 7 a.m. to a new slot of 10 a.m., starting Tuesday, Nov. 7. for the initial season release. The adjustments came as a recommendation from the San Juan Islands Ferry Advisory Committee to separate the high traffic demand (both online and call-ins) of the two-month release from those looking to make a reservation during the two-week and two-day release, which will remain at 7 a.m. daily.

Altered Vessel Capacity Allocation

They also revisited the allocation of vessel capacity for reservations. Whereas previously 90% of the vessel capacity was open for reservations with a 10% reserve for standby and emergency vehicles, this ratio is changing. Starting this winter season, 75% of the vessel space will be up for reservations, with the remaining 25% held for emergency and standby vehicles. This change aims to ensure a smoother sailing experience for all, with a dedicated and increased space for unforeseen circumstances and last-minute travels.

Phased Release of Reservations

Similar to previous, there will continue to be a phased release of reservations, with the new capacity limits for each sailing. They will be:

~2 months before the season start date (he Winter will be 1 week later than the normal 2-month)

  • 25% of standard vehicle space is released.

  • All 75% of tall, non-standard vehicle space is released.

2 weeks before each sailing date at 7:00 a.m. PT

  • Additional 25% of standard vehicle space is released.

2 days before each sailing date at 7:00 a.m. PT

  • The final 25% of standard vehicle space is released.

This phased release shifts total reservations to 75% of capacity (down from 90%) previously, which aims to provide added standby space (25% versus only 10%). The goal is to help provide additional standby travelers (ie- those without a reservation) and also to help ensure reservation holders make sailings during service disruptions if there are vessel or staffing constraints that cause a sailing to be canceled.

While it’s not a perfect system, we appreciate the updates and changes as the WSF continues to address vessel and staffing challenges to help make island travels smoother.

Elevating Accessibility: Our Latest Driveway Upgrade Project

The guest experience is something we continue to focus on- from design and decor to amenities to make our guests stay more comfortable. We are committed to continually enhancing the comfort and accessibility of our homes. Sometimes, the updates involve major upgrades, and we wanted to share one of our recent capital improvement projects enhancing the guest experience at our Rosario Sea Views property with a major upgrade to the driveway and parking area.

Here’s a look at how we transformed the driveway to ensure smoother, safer access for all vehicles - year round!

The Challenge

The steep grade of the driveway presented a significant hurdle for vehicles, making the drive up and down quite challenging, especially during the summertime. During the dry season, the gravel driveway became very loose due to lack of moisture causing vehicle tires to spin. Additionally, the spinning caused ‘humps’ to form in several areas up the drive. - which became an ongoing cycle with each vehicle passing week-over-week, despite constant raking and regrading. : (

We knew that a permanent solution was needed. However, there are no asphalt paving companies on Orcas Island. So, a quick shout-out to the construction companies that did an amazing job from start to finish - Lawson Construction (Friday Harbor) and Asphalt NW (Bellingham) - including getting a LOT of heavy equipment and machinery to Orcas in order to complete the job.

The Transformation: Asphalt Refinishing

The project commenced with a meticulous preparation phase, ensuring the base was well-prepared for asphalt laying. The asphalt was then professionally laid down and rolled to compaction, providing a new smooth surface that significantly enhanced the ability for all vehicles to navigate the steep grade during all seasons.

The Benefits:

The results were immediate and impressive:

  • Enhanced Accessibility: The newly refinished driveway now offers a gentle, manageable slope, making it much easier for all types of vehicles to access the property.

  • Smooth Ride: The asphalt surface provides a smooth ride, reducing the bumps and jolts experienced previously.

  • Improved Safety: With the less steep and smoother driveway, the safety of driving up and down has been notably enhanced, especially during wet or icy conditions.

  • Improved Parking: We had the entire parking area completed in addition to the driveway access, making for a smooth transition from parking to the front entry.

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Besides functionality, the fresh, sleek look of the new asphalt driveway has added a touch of modernity and aesthetic appeal to the property.

The End Results:

We are thrilled with the outcome of this driveway refinishing project for our guests. But honestly, we might be a little more excited that we don’t have to rake out the humps in the drive any longer! : )
